The decision to treat losing a loved one is an important and positive step in dealing with your grief.
Although it is not for everyone, treatment or counseling can help you understand your emotions and develop ways to deal with pain in everyday life.
If you do not have any type of treatment before, you may be nervous and do not know what to expect. Here are some common ideas that are good to have during the first session:
I don’t think I can do this
If you are nervous – don’t worry. This is normal. You can even have cold feet and cancel the session and again, that’s fine. It can take some attempts to get there, so do not be too hard on yourself.
Your doctor or counselor knows that the first counselling session can be difficult to face. Cheryl will do everything possible to make it a comfortable and friendly experience. It’s okay if you tell her you’re nervous. They do not judge or put you under any pressure. Be as truthful as you want.
This feels strange
When you begin to talk about your loss and your feelings, you may realize that it is strange to talk to someone strange to you about these things. So you might be surprised how easy it is to communicate.
Treatment may feel strange at first. It is quite different from what kind of conversation we usually have in daily life. You will feel less strangely the more sessions you have, the more comfortable you feel with your counselor, the room you are in, and the types of questions you will be asked.
I do not like my counsellor
You may find that you do not like the therapist or counselor. This is a natural reaction to the feeling that they are “snooping” or conveying painful past experiences. They may ask questions you do not like, which may make you feel angry or uncomfortable.
Remember that it is always advisable to tell the therapist or counselor if they say something they do not like. They do not want to make you feel uncomfortable.
However, if you really feel that you have any contact with them, you can try another advisor or therapist. Finding someone who can really open can take a long time, but it will be worth it.
I do not know what to say
There can be long silences during treatment. This is the method many therapists and consultants use to encourage speech. They can also stop letting them think about what has just been said.
At first, this silence may seem uncomfortable, but remember that there is no pressure for you to start talking until you are ready.
Why are they asking about this?
Sometimes therapists will ask you questions that do not seem to be relevant to the problem that you came to discuss.
However, therapists are there to help you understand yourself better, and this can mean looking at all aspects of your life. To understand how to deal with your feelings now, you may need to explore past incidents that have made you out of you.
Always remember that the therapist or counsellor is there to help you. If you feel uncomfortable, angry or uncomfortable, it’s okay to say so. By sincerity with them, you can get more each cycle.
